We believe in a world where children, women and men most vulnerable to extreme poverty have the right to a life of peace, prosperity and security. Our programs in Mozambique aim to improve the social and economic conditions of the most marginalised communities, by improving their access to health care and opportunities to generate an income.

Integrated Rural Development Program
Running since: 2014
Partner Agencies: Caritas Regional Chokwe
Aims: Food security, safe drinking water, health care, increased income, raised awareness for protection and gender issues.
Who it is for: Poor, marginalised communities in Mozambique
Achievements:
- Over 200 people have access to safe drinking water from a new, extended water supply network
- More than 200 farmers have diversified and increased their crop yields
- Improved irrigation through conservation farming, strengthening food security
- Over 300 families have constructed toilets
- Better hygiene practices mean a 70% reduction in diarrhea cases
- 80 community members have joined savings groups and engaged in small businesses
Fact: The program is expected to benefit over 5000 over the course of its lifetime
More background
Although Mozambique has experienced strong economic growth, it remains one of the poorest, most underdeveloped countries in the world. Around 46% of the population lives below the national poverty line.
Food Security: Up to two million people are at risk of acute food insecurity, while nearly 45% of children under five are malnourished. Most people cannot afford the minimum costs for an adequately diversified diet.
Marginalisation: Some community members are excluded from social, economic and political life, as a result of socioeconomic standing, disability or education.
Natural Disasters: Mozambique is highly prone to natural disasters. With the majority of its population working in agriculture, Mozambique’s farmers are particularly susceptible to drought, cyclones, and flooding which have devastated crops and livelihoods (sources...World Bank, WFP).
